St. Patrick's Day Almost Made Me Feel Like A Failure

At the beginning of March, I noticed so many cute ideas for St. Patrick's Day crafts, activities, and food. The internet was full of ways to make the day (and the days leading up to the day) extra special for young children. I loved all the cute things I saw, and was excited to implement some of them with Stephanie.

As it got closer and closer to St. Patrick's Day, I kept reminding myself to get some supplies for crafts, and think about the "green" food I hoped to make. Yet every day passed without me doing anything.

Finally it was March 17th.

I opened my laptop first thing in the morning and was inundated with other people's photos on Facebook and Twitter. Leprechauns had arrived at their houses overnight and made a mess. Adorable crafts had been executed and were displayed prominently in houses. Breakfast tables were set with green plates, napkins, silverware, and food. Shamrocks were everywhere. But in the Taylor house? Nothing.

I started to feel like this was a major mom-fail. The guilt began to creep in. But then I stopped myself. I'm trying so hard not to feel guilty about the little things. In the grand scheme of our life, did this really matter? No. Stephanie is two. She wouldn't even know it was St. Patrick's Day if I hadn't told her, and even when I did tell she had no idea what it even meant.

So I chalked this up to an opportunity that I didn't take, but not an opportunity to feel like a failure. In future years, when I am getting more sleep and the kids can really appreciate it, we will do more to celebrate these little holidays.

And at least they looked extra adorable:

  1. Oh girl I hear you. I felt so bad that I didn't get the "Kiss me I'm Irish" tshirt at Carters for my son. And I wanted to do a little 4 leaf clover craft with him, and never got around to that. On and on and on. But he had a grand old time at the Rhodes on the Pawtuxet dancing to Irish music with his Nana and Granddaddy. He didn't even know what was going on, it was my own procrastinating. He looked cute, he had fun, that's all that matters. Next year! Next holiday! ;)

    1. Next year. Next Holiday. That's my new mantra, haha! I'm glad to hear i'm not the only mom who dropped the ball on St Patrick's Day. And I don't think any of our kids are any worse off for it. :)

  2. Good for you! We did NOTHING to mark the day other than saying "it's St. Patrick's Day." And my children survived. :D

    1. I'm glad i'm not the only one! I find that the children don't seem to care one way or the other. Especially for a holiday like this...it's just another day for them.

  3. They do look cute! I know how ya feel though. We did make a craft and some green foods but there have been holidays with very little. We do what I have time (and energy) to do and when they're so little they don't even know their missing something. There's always Easter!! LOL

    1. Thank you! I agree about Easter...another chance to do all the fun things I want to do! I've actually already had my 2 year old do an Easter craft. I'm starting extra early this time!

  4. Honey, you are far from a failure. Who decides which days are "major" holidays, anyway? There is a reason to celebrate for each day of each year, but we ignore the obscure. I am glad you forgave yourself. From my perspective, each day you spend loving time with our children, taking them to parks, arranging play dates, creating crafts, etc., those are celebrations the kids enjoy more than observing adult holidays.

  6. Don't feel bad at all! I did nothing for St Pattys day or Vday! You are a wonderful mommy who doesn't need to celebrate or make a big deal of every holiday. And you are one step ahead of me- I brought nothing green for the kids- Mommy fail, lol.
